Get to a more Healthy U at the Library!  The Library is pleased to offer a series of programs and services that help to nurture the mental, emotional, and physical wellness of the Yorba Linda community.  Sponsored by a grant from the California State Library, the Yorba Linda Public Library is now offering various services and events themed around healthy living.

Did you know that board games and puzzles offer players more than just a fun, recreational outlet?  Studies show that such activities help to relieve stress, improve brain function, stimulate the mind, boost creativity, increase attention spans, and improve social skills.  To view the collection of board games & puzzles available for check-out, please visit our Game Lending Library. 

 

Day Pack Hike Kits

Get to a more Healthy U by exploring local hiking trails in Yorba Linda, Orange County, and Los Angeles County.  The Library is now offering Day Pack Hiking Kits to provide you with the tools to enjoy a recreational hike.  Day Pack Hike Kits check out for 10 days, are not renewable, and are available to Yorba Linda Public Library Card holders ages 18 & older.  Check the Library’s catalog for availability.

 

Sewing Machines, Crochet & Knitting Kits

Did you know that crafting is good for your health?  Not only does learning how to do such things as sewing, crocheting, or knitting gain you a life-long skill, it can also relieve stress, improve memory function, protect the brain from aging, and increase your overall happiness!  In particular, those who suffer from depression & anxiety often report less stress and more happiness after crafting.  The Library is now offering crochet & knitting kits.  These kits will provide you with materials to learn the art of knitting or crocheting.  Plus, we’ve included enough yarn to create your first scarf!  The Library is also offering sewing machines.  Check the Library’s catalog for availability.

 

Storytime To Go Literacy Kits

Did you know reading daily to young children, starting in infancy, can help with language acquisition and literacy skills?  Take the joy of reading to another level with one of the LIbrary’s Storytime To Go Literacy Kits!  Kits feature a variety of tools to encourage interaction between parents and their kids.  Each hikt is based on a theme and includes books, a music CD, storytelling props, fingerplays, as well as rhymes.  Themes include: Apples, Bears, Colors, Cookies, Counting, Dinosaurs, Ducks, Farm, Food, Frogs, Gardening, Hats Mice, Monkeys and Friends, Pets, Pigs, School, and Winter.  Check the Library’s catalog for availability.

Coffee Talk: Dance Medley Class

Tuesday, February 28 at 10:00 a.m.

Join us for a fun exercise class in which you get to try different dance styles including Zumba, line dancing, and salsa.  Once you have tried out your new moves, enjoy healthy snacks!  Provided in partnership with Caremore.  Adults (18+) only please.

 Cultivating Joy Through Mindfulness Practices

Wednesday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m.

Mindfulness has been described as the “ultimate happiness project,” an ancient tradition of cultivating joyful living.  In this program you will learn how meditating and giving wholehearted attention to what we are doing leads to increased joy and contentment. Adults (18+) only please.  This event is sponsored by the Library Services and Technology Act.

Grow It Now: All About Herbs

Thursday, March 9 at 7:00 p.m.

Learn how to grow tasty and fresh herbs to use in your cooking.  Find out which herbs are drought tolerant and beautiful.  Presented by UCCE Master Gardeners of Orange County.

How to Draw: Seascapes

Wednesday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m.

Learn how to shade, highlight, and blend colors while creating a seascape using colored pencils with instructor Lorri Keevern.  Adults (18+) only please. 

From Scratch: Sausage Making

Wednesday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m.

Join the Jonathans of Table & Field for an evening of artisan sausage making!  Learn how to grind, season and pack your own sausage links at home.  Small samples will be provided.

From Scratch: Pasta Making

Wednesday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m.

Fresh homemade pasta is easy to create.  The Jonathans of Table & Field will demonstrate simple, effective pasta making techniques and recipes that will inspire your everyday meals.  Small samples will be provided.  Adults (18+) only please.

The Importance of Brain Health

Join a representative from Alzheimer’s Orange County to learn about age related changes in memory and learning, review possible risks and threats to brain health.  Learn what you can do to protect your brain health.
